Villa Angela FC scored an emphatic 4-1 win against Escalante FC to secure their place in the final of Dynamic Football League last August 28 at the Pana-ad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
It was Escalante who had the first crack when they were awarded a penalty just after three minutes. Alfe Sebuha stepped in for the penalty but his shot was way off target. Villa Angela would make them pay minutes later when a clearance from goalkeeper CJ Mendoza found its way upfield to Jaime Poderoso who was fouled but the advantage was given by referee Linjun Talaver allowing FJ Serios to score the opener.
VAFC had a chance to double the lead when John Vendell Marcellana struck from point blank range forcing the goalkeeper to a great save. Escalante had few chances in the half, mostly from long distance, as the Villa Angela defense was on point with veterans Noriel Revilla, Michael Benedicto, Hemerson “Recoy” Campo, and Reymark “Boy-boy” Fernandez. Serios and MJ Benedicto had chances near the end but the 1-0 scoreline stood by the halftime whistle.
VAFC didn’t waste time from the restart after a good individual effort from the younger Benedicto whose shot was saved by Daniel Ramos. The second goal would come in the 50th minute when an overlapping Fernandez placed a teasing ball towards Carlo Tacusalme who spun around in both directions, beating the keeper, and slotting one home for the 2-0 lead. VAFC had another great buildup minutes later when Team Captain Patrick Martir produced a lovely ball towards Serios who issued another through ball to a rushing Marcellana who beat the keeper but had his shot hit the post.
Things got interesting in the 58th when the young Escalante squad pulled one back care of Joash Cabus. Cabus, who was the lone bright spot for Escalante, connected with a Sebuha free kick which hit the post and went into the goal. The veterans would secure the lead again when another Marcellana-Serios combination saw Marcellana racing to a one-on-one and securing the 3-1 lead for Villa Angela.
Serios again found himself in a 1v1 situation and tried to bend one past Ramos who went full-stretch for the save in the 67th minute. Escalante would have their own chances in the final twenty with the best one coming from Cabus whose shot was tamed well by Mendoza. Villa Angela would have the final word when substitute Van Mapa issuing a good ball towards MJ Benedicto who ran through the box. Benedicto was tackled by the keeper allowing Garette Parcon to tap in the free ball to complete the 4-1 scoreline.
It was a gritty win for the veteran squad, composed of mostly La Salle Bacolod Alumni, who turned back time and produced a timely performance towards the final. Villa Angela FC will meet Ceres-La Salle FC on September 4 to decide the winner of the tournament. The USLS College varsity squad trampled Silver Dragon FC 10-1 in the other semi-final.
The rest of the Villa Angela squad includes Nino Aledro, Archie Bayquin, Andy Coscolluela, Jet Diel, Mark Hilay, Dave Javellana, Francis Liza, Nacho Mendezona, and playing manager Miguel Rivero.
