Imagine this. The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the ASEAN Football Fedration (AFF) propose a bid to FIFA to host the 2026 World Cup.
It will be not only be a hit of massive proportions but bringing the World Cup closer to home will bring joy to the football-loving one billion ASEAN population (by 2026).
Manila, Singapore, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi, Bangkok, Bandar Seri Begawan, Phnom Pehn, Yangon, and Vientiane will be hosting the group games. Logistically, the countries will only need to focus on one venue per country and no additional cost to build more stadiums. It will be interesting to note that the Football Federation of Australia is part of the AFF and including them as hosts would add to the fun as well.
For the ASEAN representative, qualification will be done via the Suzuki Cup where the winners would not only play in the tournament but also host the World Cup Final as well. Since the ASEAN integration will already start by 2015, I think the time is right for us to dream and eventually make this into reality.
